Shopify SEO, working with the platform's constraints

Shopify makes a good store easy and a good URL structure impossible. Most Shopify SEO work is deciding how to live with that rather than fighting it.

Before you read the rest

Shopify's own SEO page is the first result for this search, and for a lot of store owners that documentation plus a careful afternoon is genuinely enough. Read it before you hire anybody, including me.

The structural quirks that matter

Every product is reachable at more than one URL: once on its own, and again inside every collection it belongs to. Shopify canonicalises this for you, which is right, but the internal links still point at the collection versions, and that dilutes the signal you are trying to send.

Collection pages are paginated in a way that buries deeper products, and the filtering creates URLs Google will happily crawl and should not. On a store with a lot of variants this becomes the main technical issue.

The blog is a second-class citizen in Shopify's structure, and the theme usually renders it badly. If content is part of your plan, that is worth sorting before you write twenty posts into it.

What tends to work

Collection pages treated as landing pages, with the buying guidance above the fold rather than as filler underneath the grid. This is the single highest-return change on most small stores.

Internal linking done deliberately: from the blog into collections with descriptive anchors, and between related collections. Shopify's default navigation does not do this for you.

App discipline. Every app that injects script into the theme costs speed, and a store running fourteen of them is slow in a way no image optimisation will fix. Removing three is often worth more than adding anything.

What this search page looks like right now

I measured "shopify seo expert" in Canada on 2026-09-21, running it 3 times rather than once. Google wrote its own answer above the results on every run, which changes the job: the page has to be the kind of source an AI answer draws from, not just a page that ranks under it. The full measurement across eleven searches is here.

Questions from shopify stores

Are Shopify SEO apps worth it?
Mostly no. The ones that write meta descriptions in bulk produce text that reads like it was written in bulk. The ones that claim to fix speed usually add script to do it.
Can you edit my theme?
Small template changes yes. Anything structural I will brief and your developer will build, so that nobody is guessing about what was changed.
What does it cost?
$499 for an audit, retainers from $750 a month, $2,500 for a full programme with paid search. Details here. The price does not change by industry.
