What an SEO consultant costs in Canada
The most asked question on Canadian SEO hiring searches is price, and almost nobody answers it. My prices, the ranges I see, and what the ad auction says.
By Lasse Pettersen, independent SEO consultant, Collingwood
I measured the “people also ask” box on five Canadian city searches for SEO consultants on 21 September 2026. In four of the five, the first or second question was about price:
- How much does SEO typically cost in Toronto?
- How much does an SEO consultant cost?
- How much does SEO cost in Calgary?
- How much does SEO cost in Canada?
Google keeps surfacing the question because the pages ranking for these searches keep not answering it. Every one of them says “contact us for a custom quote”, which is the same sentence used by every industry that would rather you did not compare.
So here are actual numbers.
What I charge
- Audit, $499 one-off. A crawl, the profile assessment, map rankings measured across a grid, the competitor and keyword work, and a prioritised fix list your own developer can build from. It stands alone. Plenty of people take it away and never hire me again. The scope and exclusions are on my SEO consulting services page, in Canadian dollars plus HST.
- Advisory, from $499 a month. You have someone doing the work. I review it, tell you what I would change, and write briefs your team can build from. The advisory terms list what each review covers.
- Retainer, $750 to $1,500 a month. I run the search side of the business. The upper end is for multi-location operators, where the work genuinely doubles. The retainer scope lists what is included.
- Full programme, $2,500 a month. The retainer plus Google Ads built against a measured market size, call tracking, and missed-call follow-up. Ad spend is separate and stays on your own card, per the full programme terms.
Those are the same prices in every industry, law firms included, whether you call from Collingwood or from Vancouver. I do not price by postcode and I do not discount for contract length. The consulting terms are month to month, thirty days notice either way, because a discount for a lock-in is a fee for removing your ability to leave.
What the wider market charges
One survey exists. Ahrefs polled 439 SEO providers for its pricing study, updated August 2024. The most common hourly rate was $75 to $100, charged by 24% of respondents. For consultants, the most common band was $100 to $150 an hour. Looking at the U.S. and Canada alone, 66.7% charged $75 to $200 an hour, and 79.1% charged at least $1,001 a month on a retainer. The study does not split out Canada, so read it as a band, not a quote.
Anything national or ecommerce at scale goes higher, and the numbers stop being comparable because the work stops being comparable.
Take an example. At the top of the consultant band Ahrefs reported, a $300 monthly fee buys two hours. Two hours a month cannot run a search programme. What it can do is produce a report, which is why the cheap end of this market is full of reports.
What the ad auction says
One indirect measure of how crowded a market is: what advertisers pay for the click. On the Canadian keyword data I pulled the same day, the cost per click for “seo consultant toronto” was around $30, and “freelance seo consultant” around $32. “SEO consultant” nationally sat near $4.
When agencies are willing to pay thirty dollars for one click on a hiring query, their average client is worth a great deal more than that, which tells you where the retainer figures in that market really sit. It also tells you that some of what you pay a large agency is buying the next client rather than serving you, which is true of every business and worth knowing anyway.
The question that actually matters
Not “what does it cost” but “what does it cost against what it returns”. Those are answerable for most local businesses:
- What is a customer worth to you over a year, on average? Most owners can read this off last year’s invoices, and if you do not, that is the first thing to fix, before any marketing spend.
- How many extra customers a month would make the fee obviously worth it? As an example, take my $750 retainer and a customer worth $1,200. The answer is one.
- Is one extra customer a month plausible in your market? That depends on how much search demand exists where you are, which is measurable before you spend anything.
I have worked that sum through with two contrasting businesses in are SEO consultants worth it, including the cases where it comes out against hiring anybody.
If the answer to the third question is no, do not hire anybody. Telling somebody their market is too small to justify a retainer costs the sale and saves them a year of fees, and it is the right answer often enough to be worth asking.
Why the prices are on the page
Publishing prices costs you the enquiries from people who cannot afford you, which is the point. It also removes the part of the sales process where both sides pretend the number depends on things it does not depend on.
If you are still deciding whether to buy a person or a firm at all, I have written the comparison with both sides of it in SEO consultant vs agency, including where the agency wins. If you want to talk about which of these fits, the SEO consulting services page has what each one includes, and you can book fifteen minutes without a form in between.
Method
Prices are mine, current on the date of publication and checked against the consulting page on 22 October 2026. Market ranges come from the Ahrefs pricing study, read on 22 October 2026, and I have not audited anybody else’s rate card. Cost-per-click figures are Google Ads data for Canada pulled on 21 September 2026 and they move constantly. People-also-ask questions were recorded the same day from city-level searches.
Questions about SEO rates
What is a fair SEO expert hourly rate in Canada?
Two-thirds of the U.S. and Canadian providers in the Ahrefs pricing survey charged between $75 and $200 an hour. That is the band. I do not bill by the hour, and I would not judge a provider by the hour either. An hour tells you what the work cost the seller. It does not tell you what the work returned to you.
Why do you not charge by the hour?
The hour rewards the slow fix. A fixed monthly fee means the faster I solve a problem, the better the month pays me, which puts my incentive next to yours. The cost of that choice is mine. A month with a hard problem pays the same as a month with an easy one.
What should a written quote include?
Four things: the scope, the exclusions, who implements, and how you leave. Ad spend, photography and design are the usual exclusions, and mine are listed in my SEO consulting terms. A quote that does not say how you leave is a lock-in with the exit left out. Ask before you sign. Every time.
Does a higher hourly rate mean better work?
No. The same survey found that consultants charged more than double the hourly rate of freelancers. That is a price difference, not a measurement of results. Nobody has published that measurement, and a provider who quotes one is selling.
