SEO consultant contract length: the term is not the timeline

How long an SEO consultant contract should run, what a long minimum term really buys, and the five clauses that matter more than the number of months.

By Lasse Pettersen, independent SEO consultant, Collingwood

The right SEO consultant contract length is a month at a time, with thirty days notice either way, after a first piece of work that is priced on its own. A fixed minimum term is not wrong in itself. What matters is what it protects.

One case for a long term is that SEO takes months, and that part is true. But the time the work takes and the time you are bound to pay for it are two different numbers, and a contract that merges them asks you to carry the consultant’s risk.

One declaration first: I sell month to month, so I have an interest in this answer. Hold my own terms, written out beside my SEO consulting services, to the same tests as anybody else’s.

What Google says about time

I opened the SEO Starter Guide from Google on 21 October 2026. Its footer showed it as updated on 10 December 2025. On how long a change takes to show, it says some changes “could take several months”. On judging them, it says “you likely want to wait a few weeks to assess whether your work had beneficial effects in Google Search results.”

A slow change can still be checked early.

That is an argument for patience. It is not an argument for a lock-in. Patience is something you choose again each month. A lock-in removes the choice.

The timeline is how long the work takes. The term is how long you cannot leave.

What each shape of term costs you to leave

Contract length is only half of the figure that matters. The other half is what you owe on the day you decide to stop. Four shapes cover most of what you are likely to be offered.

Term shapeWhat you owe if you stopWho carries the risk
Monthly with thirty days noticeThe current month and the notice periodThe consultant
A fixed first stage, then monthlyThe rest of that stage, then the notice periodShared, if the stage has a named output
A fixed minimum termEvery month left in the termYou
A fixed term that renews itselfEvery month left, plus a new term if you miss the windowYou, twice

The last row is the one to read slowly. A renewal clause turns a decision you made once into a decision you have to remember to unmake, by a date, in the form the contract names. Put that date in your calendar on the day you sign.

When a longer term is fair

There is an honest case for a fixed term, and it deserves a fair hearing.

Some work is front-loaded. A site migration, a rebuild of the service pages or a backlog of technical fixes can take most of its hours in the first weeks. On a month to month agreement, a client could take that work and leave after one payment. A minimum term is one way a consultant protects against that.

The better fix is to price the front-loaded work as a project, with a scope and an end. Then the monthly part can run month to month, because nobody is carrying unpaid work. If a proposal spreads a project across a year of fees, ask for the project price on its own line. A consultant who cannot name that price has not yet worked out what the project is.

This is how I handle it, and it has a cost. The audit is $499 and priced to stand alone, so the measurement is paid for before any monthly work starts. My consulting page says what follows: some people take the audit to their own developer and never hire me again. In my view, that lost work is the price of not needing a lock-in.

Five clauses that matter more than the length

Two contracts with the same length can be very different to leave. Look for these five lines.

  • How notice is given. By email or by letter, to whom, and from which date it counts. If the clause is hard to follow, notice is hard to give.
  • The renewal window. If the term renews itself, the contract should name the period in which you can object. Find it before you sign.
  • What you owe on early exit. A contract may charge the months left, a fixed fee, or say nothing. Silence means you negotiate it at the moment you are least happy.
  • What stays yours. Accounts in your name, including the Google Business Profile and analytics, and content that belongs to you. My page puts it as “if we part company nothing gets switched off”. Ask every consultant to write the same.
  • Work in progress. A half-written page or a half-built fix list should be handed over when you leave, not held back. Pages and fixes already built should stay on your site when you go.

None of these needs a long contract to be fair. A month to month agreement can still get all five wrong.

Put the decision month inside the term

The most useful line in an SEO contract names the month in which you and the consultant review the baseline and decide whether to continue. Its length comes second.

Google’s guide says you likely want to wait a few weeks before you assess a change. My own written commitment is “an honest month-four conversation if the work is not paying”. Whatever month a consultant names, check where it falls against the term.

If the decision month comes before the term ends, the months in between are paid for whatever you decide. On a twelve month contract that names month four for the decision, most of the fees fall after it. Write that sum next to the monthly fee, because it is the real price of the term. Whether the fees pay for themselves at all is a separate sum, and I have run it for two contrasting businesses in whether SEO consultants are worth it.

A decision you cannot act on is not a decision. It is a report.

What a long term tends to signal

This part is my judgment, not a measurement. A consultant who wants a long term for advisory work, where nothing is front-loaded, is protecting revenue rather than work. I would ask why, and I would want a reason that names a task. A ranking guarantee paired with a long term deserves one more question. No one controls Google’s rankings, so ask what happens in writing if the guarantee is missed.

A long term can also mean the consultant expects slow results and wants to be paid through them. That can be honest. Then the proposal should say what moves first, and by when, so you can see whether it did.

A ranking is not the outcome. A booked job is the outcome. A term long enough that nobody has to check the second is too long.

Questions owners ask before they sign

How long should an SEO consultant contract be? In my judgment, month to month, after a first piece of work priced on its own. If you accept a fixed term, keep it no longer than the point where you can judge the work. Get the decision month in writing.

Is a minimum term a warning sign? Not on its own. Ask what the consultant does in the fixed months that could not be priced as a project. If the answer names front-loaded work, price that work separately. If the answer is that SEO takes time, that is the timeline argument again.

Can I leave a fixed term early? Only on the terms the contract states. Read the early exit clause before you sign, not after. I am not a lawyer. For a large contract, an hour of a lawyer’s time is cheap next to the months you could be bound to.

Should I take a discount for signing a longer term? Run the sum first. A discount buys a lower monthly fee and costs you the right to stop. Why I do not offer one is set out with the prices in what an SEO consultant costs in Canada.

Where this leaves you

If you are still choosing between one person and a firm, the term belongs in that choice too. I compare the two choices in the SEO consultant vs agency decision, including where the agency wins. If you are hiring me as an SEO consultant in Toronto, the same five clauses and the same decision month apply. Distance changes nothing in the contract.

I cannot see the contract on your desk from Collingwood. Its renewal window, its exit clause and its decision month are in the wording, and only reading it settles them. As part of advisory, I offer “an independent read on any proposal you are given”, and the contract is part of the proposal.

My SEO consulting services cost $499 for an audit and from $750 a month for a retainer, plus HST, with no minimum term.

Method

Both Google quotes were read on 21 October 2026. The four term shapes, the five clauses and what I advise for each are my judgment, not a survey.

Start with a 15 minute call

No deck and no discovery phase. Tell me the site and the problem, and I will tell you whether I can help and what it would cost. If I am the wrong person, I will say so on the call.
