An SEO consultant for Toronto businesses, working remotely

Toronto buyers search for a firm about twice as often as for a person, and yet the top two organic results here belong to two individuals. Whatever Google is rewarding on this page, it is not size.

What the first page actually looks like

I measured this with Google's location set to Toronto on the date above, because a ranking checked from Collingwood is not a Toronto ranking. The top two results are individual consultants: Ahmet Kul at one, Paul Teitelman at two. Third is a LinkedIn page, fourth is Semrush's directory of agencies, which is a listing rather than a business.

Agencies do appear, and several are strong, but they sit at five and below. Three map pack slots sit above the lot of them, so the first businesses most people see are the ones nearest them with a verified address.

The demand runs the other way. In Canadian Google Ads data measured the same day, the agency and company phrasings for Toronto carry about 7,200 searches a month against about 3,600 for the consultant, expert and specialist phrasings. Twice as many people go looking for a firm. The page still hands its top two slots to two people.

What it means if you are hiring

Ranking for this phrase is evidence of skill at ranking for this phrase, which is a different job from yours and in some ways an easier one: a consultant's own site has no product catalogue, no legacy CMS and nobody vetoing the copy.

The useful question is not who is first, but who has published something you can check. Ask for one piece of work with numbers and dates in it. Anyone serious has one.

Two of the four questions in the people also ask box on this search are about price, which tells you what Toronto buyers are actually anxious about. Mine are on the consulting page, and they do not change because the caller is from Toronto.

Working with a Toronto business from Georgian Bay

Toronto is about two hours from my desk, so an in-person meeting is possible when it is genuinely useful. Most months it is not, and the work runs the way it would anyway: shared access to the profile and the analytics, a monthly call, and written reports you can forward without translating them.

Distance matters in exactly one place, the map pack. If your business has a Toronto address and you want those three slots, proximity is doing a lot of the work and no consultant changes that. What I change is everything Google weighs beside it.

It matters nowhere else. Technical work, content, organic rankings and AI answers are the same job whether the client is on Bay Street or in Etobicoke.

Questions from Toronto businesses

Do you have an office in Toronto?
No. I work from Collingwood, Ontario, and I will not list an address I do not occupy. A virtual office used to win a map ranking is grounds for a Google Business Profile suspension, and it is the kind of shortcut that costs a client their listing rather than me my fee.
Can you get my business into the Toronto map pack?
If your business has a real address or service area there, yes, that is ordinary local SEO work and I do it. If you are asking whether I can rank a business in Toronto that has no presence in Toronto, the answer is no, and anyone who says otherwise is describing fraud.
What does it cost?
The same as anywhere else: $499 for an audit, retainers from $750 a month, and a full programme with paid search at $2,500. The consulting page has what each one covers. I do not price by postcode.
